Ink master Episode 2 ‘a Work of Art’ REcap

By Derek Paradis

Being judged on creativity, the artists worked in teams to transform ordinary office windows into a work of art with post-it notes with the judges critiquing their work on the opposite side of the windows. Hollie Marie and Pon drew an X on their skulls and they determined the teams. Hollie chose, Creepy Jason, Angel Rose, Katie McGowan and Deanna. Pon chose Gian Karle, Bob Jones, and Hiram Casas. Team Holli created a sea monster about to eat a boat, while team Pon created a fish tank scene and used the negative space and ceiling lights to create the illusion that they’re swimming in a tank. I thought Holli’s team should’ve won because you don’t “sea” many monsters eating a boat for lunch, but the judges chose Pon’s team to win and assign the human canvases.

Being judged on creativity, the artists had to take a fine art painting and do a twist with something creative with elements the canvases wanted. Bob created a Kandinsky painting inspired tattoo of an abstract jellyfish. He hit a lot of deep, rich blacks, saturated colors, composition, artistry, details, textures and dimension. Personally, I think Bob’s should have been tattoo of the day. Gian did an Aubrey-Beardsley painting of a galloping horse and we’ve heard the saying “less is more” and doing only black shading and leaving the body as negative space, put him over the top for the win of tattoo of the day. They certainly gave these historic painters a run for their money.

At the bottom of the pack stood Hollie Marie, Kate McGowan, and Deanna James. Holli Marie created a Salvador-Dali tattoo of a butterfly and geometric 3-D cubes where the cubes had a lot of imperfections. Katie McGowan created a Francesco Goya painting of a goat-looking demon eating a body. I thought it was going to send her home because the background looks like a cover-up. It was actually Deanna James that took the eliminated boot with a Picasso painting of a lady eating strawberries. I thought her tattoo was the most flattering but it is what it is. I think Deanna did a great job and she stands by her tattoo no matter what.

For some more insight on the talented Deanna James, watch No More Ink’ below hosted by Ryan Ashley.
